Properties

What is it?

Composition: Castor oil - 50ml. Pharmacological group: Herbal laxative. Pharmacological action: In the alkaline environment of the duodenum, under the action of lipase, ricinoleic acid is formed from castor oil, which at a concentration of 0.5ml/l irritates the intestinal receptors and reflexively enhances its peristalsis. Under the action of castor oil, the absorption of electrolytes and water along with them in the intestinal walls is interrupted, water secretion is enhanced, and the volume of intestinal contents increases. This enhances its motility and accelerates the process of intestinal emptying. The laxative effect appears 2-6 hours after administration. When 4g of oil is taken, the absorption of ricinoleic acid is 100%, when 50g of oil is taken - only 36%, and when 60g of oil is taken - 10%. To achieve a laxative effect, 10g of oil is required. When using the preparation, reflex contraction of the uterine muscle is also observed. Castor oil is a monounsaturated fatty acid. It is unique among fats and oils as it is the sole source of 18-carbon fatty acids with a hydroxyl group and one double bond. It contains approximately 87% ricinoleic acid, as well as palmitic, oleic, and linoleic oils, which are very well absorbed from the skin surface and contribute to nourishing, strengthening hair follicles, and promoting hair growth. Indications: Used in complex therapy as an adjunct. • Acute constipation; • Poisoning; • Food intoxication; Method of administration and dosage: As a laxative, adults take 15-30ml (1-2 tablespoons) once a day. Children aged 12 to 14 years: 5-15 ml (1-3 teaspoons) per day. Treatment should continue for 4-7 days. Precautions: It is recommended to use castor oil as a laxative for no more than 3 days. Prolonged use of castor oil can lead to digestive disorders, as well as reduced absorption of vitamins A and D - hypovitaminosis. Side effects: • Nausea, abdominal pain; • Digestive disorders, with frequent use - enterocolitis, hypovitaminosis A and D; Contraindications: • Chronic constipation; • Acute intestinal inflammation (including appendicitis); • Abdominal pain of unknown etiology; • Pregnancy and lactation; • Children under 12 years of age; Interaction with other medicinal products: Concomitant administration with fat-soluble vitamins reduces the absorption of vitamins A, D, and K. M-cholinergic blockers (antipyrine, platyphylline), antispasmodics (papaverine, drotaverine) reduce the effect of castor oil. Anticholinesterase agents (neostigmine, rivastigmine) and glycerin enhance the effect of castor oil. Overdose: When 7g/kg of castor oil is taken, symptoms are observed: nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness. Atropine sulfate and loperamide are used as antidotes. In case of overdose, it is necessary to stop using the oil and drink a large amount of fluid. Use in pediatrics: Castor oil is not prescribed for children under 12 years of age due to high sensitivity of the digestive system to irritants and the potential for dehydration. Pregnancy and lactation: The use of the preparation is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation. Effect on ability to drive and operate machinery: No effect. Dispensing rule: Pharmaceutical product group - III (over-the-counter). Shelf life: 3 years. Storage conditions: Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light. The preparation is not allowed to be used after the expiry date or if a defect is found during visual inspection. Manufacturer: LLC "Neopharmi".
