Properties

What is it?

Betadine Solution for External Use Active substance: Povidone-iodine (PVP-iodine), 100 mg per milliliter (equivalent to 10 mg active iodine). Other components: Glycerin, Nonoxynol 9, Citric acid, Disodium hydrogen phosphate, Sodium hydroxide, Purified water. Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antiseptic agent Pharmacological properties: Povidone-iodine (PVP-iodine) destroys microorganisms. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, spores, viruses, and protozoa. Reliable disinfection prevents the spread of infection and promotes healing. Due to this mechanism of action, resistance to the preparation, as well as secondary resistance during prolonged use, is not expected. As a result of complex formation with PVP, iodine largely loses its local irritant effect, which is characteristic of iodine alcoholic solutions, and therefore the skin, mucous membranes, and wound areas tolerate it well. At the same time, iodine loses its color, so the intensity of the brown discoloration is an indicator of the preparation's effectiveness. Multiple applications of the preparation may be necessary after decolorization. PVP-iodine dissolves in water and is easily washed off. Indications: • Disinfection of hands and antiseptic treatment of mucous membranes, for example, before surgical operations, gynecological and obstetric procedures, bladder catheterization, biopsy, injection, puncture, blood collection, and also as first aid in case of accidental contamination with infectious material. • Antiseptic treatment of wounds and burns. • Hygienic and surgical disinfection of hands. • Diluted Betadine solution can be used during ophthalmological interventions and for the prevention of ophthalmia neonatorum. Contraindications: - Hypersensitivity to iodine or other components of the preparation. - Hyperthyroidism or other pronounced disorders of thyroid function (signs: increased heart rate, anxiety), as well as the period after radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism until complete recovery. - Dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring. - For newborns and infants up to 6 months of age, PVP-iodine can be used only under strict indications. If necessary, thyroid function monitoring is required. Pregnancy and lactation: The preparation can be used after 2 months of pregnancy and during lactation only under strict indications and requires careful monitoring of the thyroid function of the mother and child. In these cases, the preparation can only be used for a short period. Iodine crosses the placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk. Dosage and administration: Betadine solution is intended for external use, diluted and undiluted. The solution should not be diluted with hot water. Short-term warming to body temperature is permissible. The solution is not intended for internal use. When disinfecting the skin before surgery, it is necessary to ensure that no excess solution remains under the patient (due to the possibility of skin irritation). Dosage form: The solution is available in green polyethylene bottles with a dropper, with a capacity of 30, 120, or 1000 ml. Bottles of 30 and 120 ml are packed in a cardboard box with instructions for use. Storage conditions: Store the preparation in a dry, cool, protected from light, and inaccessible to children place at 15-25°C!
