Properties
What is it?
Active substance: Povidone-iodine (PVP-iodine) 2g in 20g easily removable ointment. Other components: Sodium bicarbonate, polyethylene glycol 400, 1000, 1500, 4000 and distilled water. Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antiseptic agent. Pharmacological properties: Elemental iodine has a strong germicidal effect. In vitro experiments, it rapidly destroys all bacteria, fungi, viruses, and some protozoa. Indications: Betadine ointment is a broad-spectrum antiseptic agent for topical use, as well as for infection prophylaxis in minor cuts and abrasions, minor burns, and minimal surgical procedures. The preparation is recommended for the treatment of fungal and bacterial skin infections, as well as bedsores and trophic ulcers. Contraindications: Allergy or possible allergy to iodine; Contraindicated for regular use of the preparation in individuals with thyroid dysfunction (specifically, nodular colloid goiter, endemic goiter, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis). Dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring; Therapy and scintigraphy using radioactive iodine. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Regular use of povidone-iodine should be avoided in pregnant and breastfeeding women, as absorbed iodine crosses the placental barrier and can be excreted in breast milk. Although no adverse effects have been observed with limited-time use, caution should be exercised, and the potential impact of absorbed preparation on fetal thyroid function and development should be considered alongside the benefits of the ointment's therapeutic effect. Method of administration and dosage: The preparation is for topical use; For the treatment of infections: should be applied 1 or 2 times a day for no more than 14 days. For infection prophylaxis: should be applied 1 or 2 times a week as needed. Damaged skin should be cleaned and dried. Betadine ointment should be applied to the affected area. The treated skin may be covered with a dressing. Side effects: Povidone-iodine, the active component of Betadine ointment, is very well tolerated by patients. It is considered to have a weaker irritant effect than iodine, but may cause skin hypersensitivity reactions, for example: contact dermatitis with the development of psoriasis-like red small bullous elements. Prolonged use of povidone-iodine, as well as its application to large wounds or severe burns, can lead to symptoms of overdose. Storage conditions: Store at a temperature of 15-25°C out of reach of children!
