Properties

What is it?

Composition: Active substance: Bisacodyl; 1 suppository contains 0.01 g (10 mg) of Bisacodyl; Excipient: hard fat. Dosage form. Rectal suppositories. White or white with a slight yellowish tint suppositories. Pharmacotherapeutic group. Contact laxatives. ATC code A06A B02. Bisacodyl is a laxative that stimulates the peristalsis of the large intestine by irritating the mucous membrane or by directly stimulating the nerve endings of the submucosa and mucosa. Bisacodyl is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and affects the absorption of electrolytes. As a result, increased osmotic pressure in the intestinal lumen retains most of the water, which softens the stool and facilitates its passage through the large intestine. In addition, the volume of stool increases, which stimulates peristalsis and facilitates defecation. Bacterial enzymes in the large intestine metabolize bisacodyl to an active compound, diphenol, which is conjugated in the liver during the first pass with glucuronic or sulfuric acid and returns to the intestine via enterohepatic circulation. This process prolongs the action of the drug. The action of the drug begins within the first hour after administration. See blog: What to know about the laxative Bisacodyl Indications for use: Short-term symptomatic treatment of constipation, including habitual and chronic constipation in bedridden and elderly patients; before diagnostic procedures, surgical and obstetric interventions, as well as in the pre- and postoperative period. Contraindications: Abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea of unknown etiology, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, colitis, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs, gastrointestinal bleeding, uterine bleeding, rectal diseases, acute proctitis, acute hemorrhoids, spastic constipation, incarcerated hernia, anal fissures, severe dehydration, colon carcinoma, cystitis. Hypersensitivity to bisacodyl or other components of the drug. Pregnancy and lactation. Childhood. Precautions for use: In elderly patients, frequent use of bisacodyl may exacerbate asthenia, cause orthostatic hypotension, and coordination disorders due to electrolyte loss. Like other laxatives, bisacodyl should not be used for more than 5 days without determining the cause of constipation. Use of the drug for more than 7 days should be well justified. Prolonged use can lead to habituation, where defecation is only possible after using a laxative. Unsatisfactory stimulation of defecation with the drug may indicate an organic cause of constipation. The drug can reduce serum potassium levels. Dizziness and syncope may occur during defecation; defecatory syncope and vascular reactions may develop with abdominal pain, which may be related to the constipation that led to the intake of the laxative. There have been isolated reports of abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea with bisacodyl use, which may be related to intestinal mucosal ischemia. The use of suppositories is not recommended in patients with anal fissures, proctitis, and ulcerative hemorrhoids, as this may cause painful sensations and local irritation. In patients with liver and kidney diseases, the drug should be used with caution after consulting a doctor. Special warning: Use during pregnancy or lactation. The drug should not be used during pregnancy and lactation. The ability to affect the speed of reaction while driving or operating other mechanisms is not affected. Children: The drug is not used for the treatment of children. Method of administration and dosage: The drug is intended for rectal use. Before use, remove the suppository from the strip. Bisacodyl is used only for the treatment of adult patients: 1 suppository once a day, usually in the morning. Treatment lasts no more than 7 days. Overdose. High doses of bisacodyl can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and clinically significant loss of potassium and electrolytes. Intestinal atony and congestive proctitis may sometimes develop. Prolonged use of laxatives can cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypokalemia, secondary hyperaldosteronism, and nephrolithiasis. There have been reports of damage to renal tubules, metabolic alkalosis, and muscle weakness as a result of hypokalemia. Treatment: Replacement therapy with fluids and correction of electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia). Side effects: Side effects are very rare and include irritation of the anal area (pain, burning sensation, bleeding), inflammation of the rectal mucosa, proctitis, abdominal discomfort, abdominal cramps, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea, which can lead to loss of water and electrolytes, especially potassium, mainly with prolonged use or overdose, intestinal atony, colitis, hypokalemia. Diarrhea, which can lead to electrolyte loss and, as a result, muscle weakness, cramps, arterial hypotension. Possible isolated disorders of the immune system: angioneurotic edema, anaphylactic reactions. Interaction with other drugs and other types of interaction. Bisacodyl enhances the action of cardiac glycosides due to the reduction of serum potassium levels. It also enhances the kaliuretic effect of diuretics and glucocorticoids. Shelf life. 3 years. Storage conditions. Store in the original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 15°C. Keep out of reach of children. Packaging 5 suppositories in a strip. 2 strips in a box. Dispensing category. Pharmaceutical product group III, available without a prescription.
