What is it?

International Nonproprietary Name (INN): Bisacodyl Description of Pharmaceutical Form: Cylindrical-conical suppositories, white or off-white in color. The cut surface may show a porous, foamy structure and a funnel-shaped depression. Composition of Pharmaceutical Form: One suppository contains: Active substance: Bisacodyl – 10mg; Excipients: Semi-synthetic glycerides – sufficient quantity to obtain a suppository mass of 1.0g. Dosage Form: Rectal suppositories Pharmacotherapeutic Group: Laxatives. Contact laxatives. ATC Code: A06AB02 Pharmacological Properties Bisacodyl is a diphenylmethane derivative. It exhibits laxative and carminative effects. Pharmacodynamics The mechanism of action is due to direct stimulation of the nerve endings of the colonic mucosa, increased mucus secretion in the colon, which leads to softening of the stool, improved its passage, facilitates defecation, and also accelerates and strengthens intestinal peristalsis. Pharmacokinetics Bisacodyl is not absorbed from the colon and does not reach the lacteal. With rectal administration, a pronounced laxative effect occurs within one hour (15-60 minutes). Indications Constipation caused by hypotonia and weak peristalsis of the colon (including in elderly patients; constipation after surgery, childbirth, dietary changes). Regulation of bowel function in hemorrhoids, proctitis, anal fissures. Preparation of the colon for instrumental and radiological examinations. Contraindications Hypersensitivity, intestinal obstruction, spastic constipation; strangulated hernia, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs, abdominal pain of unclear etiology, peritonitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, uterine bleeding, cystitis, acute proctitis, acute hemorrhoids, infancy (up to 1 year). Method of Administration and Dosage Rectally. Adults and children over 14 years of age – 10-20mg bisacodyl (1-2 suppositories) per day; children aged 8-14 years – 10mg (1 suppository) per day, 2-7 years – 5mg (1/2 suppository) per day. For preparation for surgery – 10mg (1 suppository) in the evening and in the morning. Overdose Symptoms: Diarrhea, disturbance of water-electrolyte balance, hypokalemia, atony of the colon. Treatment: Symptomatic. Side Effects and Reactions Intestinal colic; diarrhea, which can cause dehydration, disturbance of water-electrolyte balance, development of muscle weakness, cramps, arterial hypotension; allergic reactions. Storage Conditions Store in a dry, dark place at a temperature of 15-25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Shelf Life 3 years. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the packaging. Dispensing Conditions Pharmaceutical product group III – can be used without a doctor's prescription.
