What is it?
International Name - clotrimazole Clinical-Pharmacological Group: Antifungal agents → Antifungal preparations for topical use → Azole group Composition: Clotrimazole BP 1% w/w 1.086g Cream base, conforming to quality certificate Pharmacological Classification: Antifungal agent Indications: Used as part of combination therapy for ear infections. Clotrimazole cream is used for topical treatment of candidiasis caused by Candida albicans. For pityriasis versicolor caused by Malassezia furfur. Also used for topical treatment of the following dermal infections: tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis. Side Effects: In some cases, local irritation of the skin may occur with a mild burning sensation, redness, and itching. Dosage and Administration: Rub a sufficient amount of Clotrimazole cream into the affected area of the skin and surrounding areas twice a day, morning and evening. Clinical improvement, manifested by reduced itching, usually develops by the end of the first week of treatment with Clotrimazole cream. If no clinical improvement is observed after a 4-week course of Clotrimazole treatment, the diagnosis needs to be clarified. Laboratory Studies: If clinical improvement is not observed, a repeat microbiological examination is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other pathogens, as well as to select another method of antifungal treatment. Interactions with Other Drugs: Synergism or antagonism between clotrimazole and nystatin, or amphotericin B and flucytosine. Not known for albicans.
