What is it?
International Name - METRONIDAZOLE Clinical-Pharmacological Group: Antibacterial Agent. Infusion Solution 0.5%: 100 ml vial 1 ml 1 vial Metronidazole ..................... 5 mg 500 mg Indications: Treatment and prophylaxis of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria; CNS infections (e.g., brain abscess, meningitis); Respiratory tract infections (necrotizing pneumonia, lung abscess due to aspiration); Gastrointestinal tract infections (e.g., peritonitis, liver abscess, surgery on the large and small intestine, purulent diseases of the abdominal and pelvic organs); Gynecological infections (endometritis, hysterectomy, cesarean section, septic abortion, fever during childbirth); Nose, throat, ear, teeth, oral cavity, jaw infections (e.g., Plaut-Vincent angina); Endocarditis; Bone, joint infections (e.g., osteomyelitis); Gangrene; Septicemia with thrombophlebitis; Prophylactic use during surgical operations associated with the development of anaerobic infection, primarily in gynecology or during gastrointestinal tract surgery. Dosage and Administration: Unless otherwise prescribed, the following doses are recommended: Adults and adolescents: Day I - 0.5 g Metronidazole (100 ml intravenous infusion solution) every 6-8 hours, maximum daily dose is 2 g. Day II and subsequent days - 0.5 g every 12 hours, accordingly 1 g per day. In exceptional cases, the maintenance dose is increased to 1.5 g per day. Duration of treatment is 5-7 days. For prophylaxis before surgery, a single dose of 0.5-1.0 g Metronidazole (not more than 2.0 g) is recommended immediately before surgery. In children, it is administered 7-10 mg/kg every 8 hours, accordingly the daily dose is 20-30 mg/kg. Intravenously: Metronidazole is administered slowly, not more than 100 ml in 20 minutes, but usually administered 100 ml in 60 minutes. - It can be administered with isotonic solution or 5% glucose. - When used concurrently with antibiotics, it is recommended to administer them separately. - An opened vial is not stored. Residuals must be destroyed. - The duration of treatment with Metronidazole or other preparations containing Metronidazole does not exceed 10 days. Longer treatment is permissible in exceptional cases. Repeated treatment is rarely performed. - The limitation of the duration of treatment is due to the possibility of damage to fetal cells, and in experiments, the growth of some tumor cells has been observed. Contraindications: * Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole, its ingredients, or other nitroimidazole derivatives. * Intravenous administration of the preparation is permissible when life-threatening infections are observed and the use of other agents is ineffective.
