Pharmacological Properties Nifuroxazide is a 5-nitrofuran derivative. It acts in the intestinal lumen, i.e., it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Local inertness and inability to diffuse into organ systems and tissues distinguish it from other nitrofuran derivatives. The mechanism of action of nifuroxazide is not fully explained. Its antimicrobial and antiparasitic properties, like other nitrofuran derivatives, are likely due to the nitro-NO2 group, which has a pronounced effect on intestinal infectious diseases. Gram-positive cocci were particularly sensitive to the drug: Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus pyogenes, while among Gram-negative enterobacteria, E. coli, Salmonellae, and Shigellae are sensitive to the drug. Pharmacokinetics After oral administration, nifuroxazide is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects of the drug are manifested only in the intestinal lumen. Nifuroxazide and/or its metabolites are completely excreted with feces. The rate of excretion depends on the amount of drug taken and the motility of the digestive tract. Indications - Diarrhea in children and adults caused by alimentary infections and intoxications, particularly those caused by E. coli; - Chronic diarrhea in colitis; - Intestinal fermentation disorders; - Acute and chronic diarrhea of non-specific and undetermined etiology without invasive phenomena; - Iatrogenic diarrhea caused by antibiotic intake; - Symptomatic diarrhea in colon cancer; - Some forms of acute attacks of infectious hemorrhagic rectocolitis; - Prevention of traveler's diarrhea. Dosage and Administration A 5ml dosing spoon divided into 2.5ml increments is used for dosing. Shake the suspension well before use. Children from 6 months to 2 years: 2.5ml 3 times a day. Children from 3 to 7 years: 5ml 3 times a day. Therapy with nifuroxazide can only be continued for 7 days. Contraindications - Allergy to nitrofuran derivatives and/or excipients of the drug; - Infants under 6 months of age. Adverse Effects Nifuroxazide is characterized by good tolerability. Very rarely, it can cause sensitization and allergic reactions. Pregnancy and Lactation There is no data on whether nifuroxazide intake during pregnancy causes possible adverse effects on the fetus. Nifuroxazide is not absorbed from the digestive tract. Therefore, there is no possibility of its excretion into breast milk. Consequently, the drug can be used during lactation. Special Instructions During treatment with Enterofuryl, alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited. When treating diarrhea with nifuroxazide, rehydration (oral or intravenous) must be carried out along with therapy, taking into account the patient's condition and the intensity of diarrhea. Enterofuryl is not used in patients with fructose intolerance, malabsorption syndrome, and sucrose-isomaltase deficiency. Effect on Ability to Drive and Operate Machinery. The drug does not affect the patient's ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery. Overdose There is no data on drug overdose. Drug Interactions It is not known whether nifuroxazide interacts with other drugs. Storage Conditions and Shelf Life Store at temperatures of 15-30ºC.
