What is it?

NITROXOLINUM General Characteristics: International and Chemical Name: Nitroxoline; 5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline Main Physical and Chemical Properties: Orange film-coated tablets Composition: 1 tablet contains 0.05g of Nitroxoline Excipients: Lactose, potato starch, Aerosil, calcium stearate, magnesium basic carbonate, low molecular weight medical polyvinylpyrrolidone, talc, titanium dioxide, Tartrazine, Ponceau 4R, beeswax, Vaseline oil. Form: Film-coated tablets Pharmacological Group: Antimicrobial agent, 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative. Indications: Nitroxoline is used for the treatment of acute and chronic infections of the kidneys and genitourinary tract caused by microorganisms sensitive to it (urethritis, cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, etc.), as well as for the prevention of post-operative infections of the kidneys and urinary tract. Dosage and Administration: Nitroxoline is administered orally during or after meals. For adults, the daily dose of the preparation is 0.4g (0.1g 4 times a day). In severe cases, the daily dose can be increased to 0.6-0.8g. The maximum daily dose for adults is 0.8g. The course of treatment is 2-3 weeks. The average daily dose of Nitroxoline for children under 5 years of age is 0.2g, and for children over 5 years of age - 0.2-0.4g. The duration of the treatment course is 2-3 weeks. In chronic urinary tract infections, repeated courses of Nitroxoline may be prescribed with a two-week interval. For the prevention of post-operative infections of the kidneys and urinary tract, 0.1g of Nitroxoline is prescribed 4 times a day for 2-3 weeks. Side Effects: Dyspeptic events may occur, rarely - allergic exanthems. In isolated cases - paresthesias, polyneuropathy. In case of renal failure, special caution is necessary due to possible accumulation. In this case, the preparation should be administered in minimal doses in intermittent courses. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives. The use of the preparation is not recommended for diseases of the peripheral nervous system and optic nerve. Interactions with Other Drugs: In combination with drugs of the tetracycline group, the effects of each drug are enhanced; with nystatin and levorin - potentiation of effects. Combination of Nitroxoline with nitrofurans is not allowed to avoid summation of negative neurotropic effects. Overdose: Prolonged use of Nitroxoline can lead to the development of toxic peripheral neuritis, myelopathy, and damage to the optic nerve. Signs of possible accumulation include: nausea, vomiting, general weakness, which usually subside shortly after discontinuation of the preparation.
