What is it?
Betadine Active Ingredient: Povidone-iodine (PVP-iodine) 2g in 20g easily removable ointment. Other components: Sodium bicarbonate, polyethylene glycol 400, 1000, 1500, 4000 and distilled water. Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antiseptic agent. See blog: Betadine - effective antiseptic agent in the form of solution, ointment, mouthwash or suppositories. Pharmacological properties: Elemental iodine has a strong germicidal effect. In vitro experiments, it rapidly destroys all bacteria, fungi, viruses, and some protozoa. Indications: Betadine ointment is a broad-spectrum antiseptic agent for topical use, as well as for infection prophylaxis in minor cuts and abrasions, minor burns, and minimal surgical procedures. The preparation is recommended for the treatment of fungal and bacterial skin infections, as well as bedsores and trophic ulcers. Contraindications: • Allergy or possible allergy to iodine; • Contraindicated for regular use in individuals with thyroid dysfunction (specifically, nodular colloid goiter, endemic goiter, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis). • Dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring; • Therapy and scintigraphy using radioactive iodine. Precautions: • Caution is required during regular use in patients with chronic renal failure. • Regular use of Betadine ointment should be avoided in patients taking lithium preparations. • Thyroid function should be monitored during prolonged use. • For children, the lowest possible dose should be used, and the course of treatment should be as short as possible. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Regular use of povidone-iodine should be avoided in pregnant and breastfeeding women, as absorbed iodine crosses the placental barrier and can be excreted in breast milk. Although no adverse effects have been observed with limited-term use, caution is advised, considering both the therapeutic benefit of the ointment and the potential impact of absorbed preparation on the fetal thyroid function and development. Driving and operating machinery: The preparation does not affect the performance of these types of activities. Interactions with other medicinal products: • The use of povidone-iodine with disinfectant preparations containing mercury, silver, taurolidine, hydrogen peroxide, and benzoic acid reduces the effectiveness of both preparations. • Absorbed iodine through intact skin or wound surface may affect the results of thyroid function tests. • Povidone-iodine residues may cause false-positive results in some types of tests for occult blood in stool, as well as blood and glucose in urine. Dosage and administration: • The preparation is for topical use; • For the treatment of infections: apply 1 or 2 times a day for no more than 14 days. • For infection prophylaxis: apply 1 or 2 times a week as long as the need exists. • The damaged skin should be cleaned and dried. Betadine ointment should be applied to the affected area. The treated skin can be covered with a dressing. Side effects: Povidone-iodine, the active component of Betadine ointment, is very well tolerated by patients. It is considered to have a weaker irritant effect than iodine, but it can cause skin hypersensitivity reactions, such as contact dermatitis with the development of small red psoriaform bullous elements. Prolonged use of povidone-iodine, as well as its application to large wounds or severe burns, can lead to symptoms of overdose. Overdose: Increased iodine levels can cause goiter and the development of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Systemic absorption of iodine with multiple applications of povidone-iodine to a large wound surface or burn can cause numerous adverse effects: metallic taste in the mouth, increased salivation, pain or burning sensation in the mouth or throat, eye irritation and swelling, skin reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances and diarrhea, difficulty breathing, pulmonary edema, metabolic disturbances (metabolic acidosis and high blood sodium levels), impaired kidney function. If overdose is suspected, consult a doctor immediately. Pharmaceutical form: 20g ointment in an aluminum lithographed tube with a white polyethylene screw cap.
