A doctor will prescribe Sorvasta for the following indications: • If high cholesterol levels are observed. This event indicates a possible risk of heart attack or stroke. A doctor will recommend taking statins if diet and physical activity are insufficient to regulate blood cholesterol levels. When taking Sorvasta, it is necessary to follow a diet and engage in active physical exercise to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Or • If other factors are observed that increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other health-related problems. Myocardial infarction, stroke, and other health-related problems that can cause a disease known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis develops as a result of the accumulation of fatty deposits in the blood vessels. How to take Sorvasta Always take Sorvasta according to your doctor's prescription. If you are unsure about anything, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Recommended dosage If you are taking Sorvasta to lower high cholesterol: Initial dosage: The recommended starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily, even if you have already taken a higher dose of other statins. The doctor will determine the starting dose based on the following data: • According to cholesterol levels • According to the risk of heart attack and stroke • If any factor is observed that may increase sensitivity to potential side effects Consult your doctor or pharmacist to prescribe the starting dose of Sorvasta recommended for you. Your doctor may prescribe a starting dose of 5 mg once daily if: • If the patient is of Asian origin (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, or Indian) • Over 70 years of age • If moderate kidney problems are observed • If moderate liver problems are observed • If muscle pain (myopathy) is observed • If there is a genetic predisposition to high concentrations of rosuvastatin in the blood. Dose increase and maximum daily dose Your doctor may increase the dose up to 40 mg per day to achieve the desired cholesterol level. A four-week interval must be observed between each dose adjustment. The maximum daily dose is 40 mg of Sorvasta. This dosage is intended only for patients with high cholesterol levels and a high risk of heart attack and stroke. In patients with low cholesterol levels, the dosage may be reduced to a sufficient dose. If you are taking Sorvasta to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or health-related problems: The recommended dose is 20 mg per day. If any of the above warnings are observed, the doctor may reduce the dosage. Recommended dose in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years The recommended starting dose is 5 mg. Your doctor may increase the dose until the desired dose is achieved. The maximum daily dose is 20 mg of Sorvasta. The dose is taken once daily. Sorvasta 30 mg and 40 mg tablets are not used in children and adolescents. Potential side effects Like any medication, Sorvasta may cause side effects, although not in every patient. You should be aware of the types of side effects that may occur. Usually, these events are mild and disappear after some time. You should stop using Sorvasta and seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the following allergic reactions: • Shortness of breath - with or without swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat. • Difficulty swallowing caused by swelling of the face, lips, mouth, and/or throat.
