What is it?
International Nonproprietary Name - Thiamazolum Pharmacological group: Antithyroid preparations Therapeutic category: Antithyroid drugs General information: Thiamazole, a metabolite of carbimazole, suppresses the synthesis of thyroid hormones, thus it is effective in the treatment of hypothyroidism. It does not suppress existing thyroxine and triiodothyronine and does not block the action of thyroid hormones when taken orally or parenterally Indications Unimazole® is indicated for: - Hyperthyroidism. - Conservative long-term treatment until remission of the disease. - To achieve euthyroidism in the preoperative period and for the prevention of thyroid crisis during treatment with radioactive iodine. Dosage: The initial dose is 10-60 mg depending on the severity of hyperthyroidism. The dose is divided into three and taken at 8-hour intervals. The maintenance dose is 5-30 mg per day, in 1-3 doses, depending on the daily dose. Side effects: Side effects were observed in 3-12% of patients taking the drug and included rash, itching, dermatitis, fever, joint pain, gastrointestinal disorders, jaundice, lymphadenopathy. In addition, it can cause hypothyroidism and goiter or hypothyroidism in the fetus. The most serious side effect is neutropenia or agranulocytosis (occurs in 0.3-0.5% of patients), which usually manifests in the first few weeks after starting treatment, but later manifestation is not excluded (leukopenia with relative neutropenia was observed in 10% of patients with hyperthyroidism before treatment with antithyroid drugs). The development of neutropenia requires discontinuation of the drug. Unimazole® is contraindicated in: - Patients with hypersensitivity to the drug. - In agranulocytopenia. - During lactation. - In substernal goiter.
