Properties: Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a natural dietary supplement synthesized in the human body, specifically in mitochondria, and is a cofactor for enzymes, two of which are involved in the Krebs cycle and provide energy to tissues. Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant. It acts freely in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic environments and scavenges free radicals that can damage many organs and organ systems. Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) improves metabolism, activates the antioxidant system, reduces blood glucose levels and increases tissue sensitivity to insulin, strengthens the body's defense functions and replenishes it with energy (increases ATP levels in tissues), improves nerve impulse transmission and enhances cognitive abilities, reduces oxidative stress. It promotes serotonin production and reduces depressive symptoms. The cause of Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) deficiency is lipoic acid synthetase deficiency, caused by genetic mutation or random cell division. Mutations are caused by viruses, ultraviolet radiation, other environmental factors, or their combination. Deficiency may manifest with the following symptoms: • Early lactic acidosis; • Seizures; • Hypotonia; • Developmental and growth delay; Products containing Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) include: Red meat, beetroot, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and spinach.
