What is it?

International Name - cefazolin Clinical-pharmacological group: Antibacterial agents → Beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins and cephalosporins) → Cephalosporins → Third-generation cephalosporins Composition and dosage form 1 vial contains Cefazolin (as sodium salt) _ 1.0 g. Indications Infectious-inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug: • Respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia); • Ear, nose, and throat infections (including otitis media); • Skin and soft tissue infections: (infected wound, burn); • Bone and joint infections: (including osteomyelitis); • Intra-abdominal infections (biliary tract infections, peritonitis); • Endocarditis; • Mastitis; • Sepsis; • Genitourinary tract infections (pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis); • Venereal diseases (syphilis, gonorrhea); • Prevention of infection during surgical intervention. Dosage and administration The dosage regimen and duration of treatment are determined individually and depend on the type of infection, the localization of the infectious process, and the severity of the illness. Cefazolin is administered intramuscularly or intravenously (bolus or infusion). For intramuscular administration, the contents of the vial are dissolved in 4 ml of water for injection and administered deep into the muscle. For intravenous bolus administration, a single dose of the drug is dissolved in 10 ml of isotonic sodium chloride solution and administered slowly over 3-5 minutes. For intravenous infusion, 0.5-1.0 g of cefazolin is dissolved in 100-150 ml of isotonic sodium chloride solution or 5% glucose solution. The average daily dose for adults is 1-4 g, the maximum daily dose is 6 g. The drug is administered 2-4 times a day. For the prevention of postoperative infections, 1 g of cefazolin is administered intravenously 0.5-1 hour before surgery, 0.5-1 g during surgery, and 0.5-1 g after surgery every 8 hours for the next 24 hours. The average daily dose for children is 25-50 mg/kg of body weight, divided into 3-4 doses; for severe infections - 100 mg/kg of body weight. Side effects Gastrointestinal system: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, rarely - transient increase in liver transaminase activity. Hematopoietic system: eosinophilia, rarely - leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia. Urinary system: rarely - impaired kidney function; Allergic reactions: itching, skin rash, urticaria, Stevens-Johnson syndrome; in isolated cases - Quincke's edema, anaphylactic shock. Other: fever, arthralgia. Local reactions: pain at the injection site with intramuscular administration, phlebitis with intravenous administration. Contraindications • Hypersensitivity to the drug or other antibiotics of the cephalosporin group; • Children under 1 month of age. Pregnancy and lactation The use of the drug during pregnancy is permissible only when the expected benefit to the mother clearly outweighs the potential risk of adverse effects on the fetus. Breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment.
