What is it?
International Name - Cefiximum Pharmacological Group - III Generation Cephalosporins Pharmacological Classification - Antimicrobial (chemotherapeutic) agent, broad and medium spectrum antibiotic, third generation cephalosporin Cefiximum, an antibiotic, is a third-generation cephalosporin, similar to ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. Cefiximum is highly resistant in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases may be susceptible to cefiximum. The antibacterial action of cefiximum results from the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Indications: Cefiximum 400 is indicated for the treatment of the following infections when caused by susceptible microorganisms. Upper respiratory tract infections; e.g., bacterial pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media. Lower respiratory tract infections; e.g., bronchitis. Urinary tract infections; e.g., acute cystitis. Dosage and Administration: The absorption of Cefiximum 400 is not significantly affected by food intake. The usual course of treatment is 5-14 days. Adults and children over 12 years of age: The recommended dose for adults is 200-400 mg per day, taken either once or in two divided doses. For lower respiratory tract infections, 400 mg per day is recommended. For upper respiratory tract infections and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, taking 200 mg once daily is effective. Elderly: The same dose recommended for adults may be prescribed for elderly patients. In case of severe renal impairment, renal function assessment and dose adjustment are necessary. Children: The recommended dose in children is 8 mg/kg per day, taken once or in two divided doses. This should be done in children up to 2 years of age. In general, it is recommended to prescribe a pediatric oral suspension for children up to 2 years of age. Side Effects: Cefiximum is generally well tolerated. Most of the side effects reported in clinical trials were mild and self-limiting. Gastrointestinal disorders: The most common side effects associated with cefiximum are diarrhea and changes in stool; diarrhea was more frequently associated with higher doses. Some cases of moderate to severe diarrhea were reported, requiring discontinuation of treatment. Cefiximum should be discontinued if diarrhea occurs. Other less frequently reported gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting, and flatulence. Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported.
