Contraindications. Hypersensitivity to pimecrolimus, other macrolactams, or other components of the preparation. Method of administration and dosage: The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor based on the stage and severity of the disease. Elidel can be used for short-term treatment of signs and symptoms of atopic eczema and periodically for long-term prevention of disease exacerbations. Treatment should be initiated at the first signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Elidel should only be applied to areas affected by atopic dermatitis. Treatment should be intermittent, short-term, and not prolonged. Elidel should be applied thinly to affected areas twice daily. Studies have shown that periodic use of Elidel for up to 12 months is acceptable. If no improvement is observed within 6 months, or if the condition worsens, the use of Elidel should be discontinued. Use during pregnancy and lactation: Elidel should not be used during pregnancy. Elidel should be prescribed with caution during lactation. A breastfeeding mother may use Elidel, but not on the breast area, to prevent accidental ingestion of the preparation by the newborn's mouth.
