As Lokelma passes through your stomach and intestines, it binds to potassium, and both are excreted together in your stool, thereby lowering the level of potassium in your body. Dosage: Initiation dose - to lower your high potassium level and return it to normal: • The recommended dose is 10g three times a day. • The medicine takes one to two days to take effect. • Do not take the initiation dose for more than three consecutive days. Maintenance dose - to keep potassium levels within the normal range after they have been lowered: • The recommended dose is 5g once a day. • Your doctor may decide that you need to take more (10g once a day) or less (5g every other day). • Do not take more than 10g of the maintenance dose once a day. How to prepare and take the medicine: • Open the sachet(s) and put the powder in a glass with about 45ml of still water. • Stir well and drink the tasteless liquid immediately. • The powder does not dissolve and the liquid appears cloudy. The powder quickly settles at the bottom of the glass. If this happens, stir the liquid well again and drink it all. • If necessary, dilute the liquid with a small amount of water and drink it all to ensure you receive the full dose of the medicine.
