What is it?
International Nonproprietary Name - sodium picosulfate Clinical-pharmacological group: Gastroenterology, Hepatology → Laxatives → Intestinal peristalsis stimulants Composition 1 film-coated tablet contains: Sodium picosulfate – 10 mg. Excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, sodium starch glycolate. 1 ml of oral solution contains: Sodium picosulfate – 7.5 mg. Excipients: sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, liquid sorbitol, propylene glycol, orange flavor, pineapple flavor, purified water. Pharmacological properties Sodium picosulfate is a laxative that reduces the absorption of electrolytes and water, and enhances intestinal peristalsis. It is hydrolyzed by intestinal microorganisms to form an active metabolite, which irritates the receptors of the intestinal mucosa, thereby accelerating the movement of intestinal contents. The effect is observed 6-12 hours after administration. Pharmacokinetics Not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Does not participate in enterohepatic circulation. Indications - Constipation due to hypotonia and sluggish peristalsis of the large intestine; - To facilitate defecation in the presence of hemorrhoids, proctitis, anal fissures; - Before and after surgery; - In preparation for radiological or instrumental examination of abdominal organs. Dosage and administration Tablets: Adults and children over 10 years of age are prescribed 5-10 mg once daily at bedtime. Oral solution: 1 ml contains 15 drops. Adults and children over 10 years of age are prescribed 10-20 drops (5-10 mg) once daily at bedtime. Children aged 4 to 10 years: 5-10 drops (2.5-5.0 mg) once daily at bedtime. The drug is not recommended for children under 4 years of age. Side effects Diarrhea may cause dehydration, electrolyte and potassium deficiency, muscle weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain, arterial hypotension. If any side effect not listed in the instructions for use occurs, the patient should consult a doctor. Contraindications Intestinal obstruction, incarcerated hernia, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs (acute appendicitis, peritonitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin), gastrointestinal and uterine bleeding, spastic constipation, first trimester of pregnancy, hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, age under 4 years. Pregnancy and lactation The drug should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy. Use during the second and third trimesters and during breastfeeding is possible only after consulting a doctor. Special instructions Tablets contain lactose, so their use is not recommended in patients with hereditary lactase-galactose intolerance. The oral solution does not contain sucrose, so it can be used in patients with diabetes mellitus. There is no data on special precautions. Prolonged use is not recommended. In children, the drug is used as prescribed by a doctor. Effect on ability to drive and operate machinery: The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery. Overdose Overdose may cause colicky abdominal pain, frequent defecation, ischemia of the colonic mucosa, hyperaldosteronism. Treatment: gastric lavage, correction of electrolyte balance, antispasmodics. Interactions with other drugs Concomitant use of the drug with antibiotics reduces the laxative effect. Concomitant use with diuretics and glucocorticosteroids increases the risk of electrolyte disturbances.
