What is it?

International Nonproprietary Name - dexamethasone Clinical-pharmacological group: Glucocorticoids → Glucocorticoid agents for topical use → ENT preparations Glucocorticoids → Glucocorticoid agents for topical use → Ophthalmology Dosage form Eye/ear drops Composition 1 ml of Medexol contains: Active substance: dexamethasone phosphate 1 mg Excipients: creatinine, sodium citrate, sodium borate, polysorbate 80, benzalkonium chloride, disodium edetate, sodium metabisulfite, hydrochloric acid, water for injection. ATC code S01BA01 Pharmacotherapeutic group: Glucocorticosteroid agent. Anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent. Pharmacological properties: Pharmacodynamics Synthetic fluorinated glucocorticoid preparation for topical use. It has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and desensitizing effect. Dexamethasone actively suppresses inflammatory processes by releasing inflammatory mediators from eosinophils, suppressing the migration of mediators released from mast cells, and reducing capillary permeability. Pharmacokinetics Systemic absorption with topical use is low. After instillation into the eye, it penetrates well into the conjunctiva and corneal epithelium. Indications - Allergic blepharitis, conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis; - Acute and chronic iritis, iridocyclitis; - Prevention and treatment of inflammatory phenomena in the postoperative period; - Thermal and chemical burns (after complete epithelialization of corneal defects); - Acute external and middle otitis without tympanic membrane damage (including infected eczema of the external auditory canal). Contraindications The preparation is contraindicated in: - Hypersensitivity to the components of the preparation; - Keratitis caused by herpes simplex, chickenpox, and other viral diseases; - Fungal diseases of the eye; - Acute purulent diseases of the eye with damage to the corneal epithelium; - Corneal epitheliopathy; - Increased intraocular pressure; - Perforation of the tympanic membrane. Special instructions It is not recommended to use the preparation while wearing contact lenses. Before using the preparation, contact lenses should be removed, after which lenses can be inserted only 15 minutes after instillation of the preparation. Prolonged use of drops may lead to an increase in intraocular pressure. If the preparation is used for 2 weeks or longer, intraocular pressure should be measured regularly. Side effects Allergic reactions are possible. Method of administration and dosage regimen Instill one or two drops of Medexol conjunctivally every 3-6 hours or as recommended by a doctor. For adults – 1-5 drops in the ear 2 times a day for 6-10 days, for children – 1-2 drops in the ear 2 times a day for 6-10 days. Before use, it is recommended to warm the bottle with your hands to avoid unpleasant sensations from cold liquid entering the ear. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding During pregnancy and lactation, Medexol can be used only when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or newborn. Dosage form Eye/ear drops in a 5 ml plastic bottle with a dropper and a screw-on protective ring. The bottle is placed in a cardboard box with instructions for use. Storage conditions Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. After opening the bottle, the preparation can be used for one month!
