International Nonproprietary Name - LEVONORGESTREL Active Substance: LEVONORGESTREL Clinical-Pharmacological Group: Intrauterine Contraceptive System Composition and Dosage Form: Intrauterine system (IUS) with an active substance release rate of 20 mcg/24 hr. 1 IUS Levonorgestrel ............ 52 mg Indications: Contraception; Idiopathic menorrhagia; Dysmenorrhea; Endometrial protection against hyperplasia during hormone replacement therapy. Dosage and Administration: Insertion of the system is recommended: Within 7 days of the start of the menstrual cycle. Immediately after the first menstruation following an artificial abortion; not earlier than 6 weeks after physiological childbirth. Side Effects: Gastrointestinal tract: Nausea. CNS: Headache. Endocrine and Gynecological Status: Breast tenderness, bloody discharge from the genital tract. Skin: Acne. Side effects occur rarely, usually do not require additional therapy, and disappear within a few months. Contraindications: * The preparation is not recommended for use during pregnancy, malignant tumors of the genital organs and mammary glands, pelvic inflammatory diseases, uterine bleeding of unknown etiology, acute liver disease, thromboembolic diseases. Special Instructions: The preparation is effective for 5 years. Some women develop oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea when using Mirena, which has a therapeutic effect in menorrhagia. Menstrual function is restored after removal of the system. Drug Interactions: Regular use of phenytoin, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and rifampicin reduces the contraceptive effect of the preparation.
