- Composition: - The active substance is tafluprost. 1 ml of solution contains 15 micrograms of tafluprost. One vial (2.5 ml) of eye drops contains 37.5 micrograms of tafluprost. - Other components are: benzalkonium chloride (preservative), glycerol, sodium dihydrogen phosphate – dihydrate, sodium edetate (Ph. Eur.), polysorbate 80 and water for injections. Hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide are added to adjust the pH. Pharmacological group: Glaucoma medication Pharmacological properties: Taflotan eye drops contain tafluprost, which is a prostaglandin F2α analogue. Taflotan reduces intraocular pressure. It is used for significantly elevated intraocular pressure. Indication Taflotan is used for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Both conditions are associated with increased intraocular pressure and can eventually damage vision. Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to tafluprost or any of the other ingredients of Taflotan. Precautions: Taflotan may cause the following effects, some of which may be long-lasting: • Taflotan use may increase eyelash length, thickness, color, and number, and cause unusual hair growth on the eyelid. • Taflotan may cause darkening of the skin around the eyes (tonality). To reduce the risk of darkening of the skin around the eyes, wipe off excess liquid from the skin. • Taflotan may change the color of the iris. If Taflotan is used in only one eye, the color of the treated eye may differ significantly from the color of the other eye for a long time. You should inform your doctor: • if the patient has kidney or liver problems • in case of asthma • in case of any other eye disease. Interactions with other medicines If you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, tell your doctor or pharmacist, even if they are medicines that can be obtained without a prescription. If you are using other eye preparations, maintain an interval of at least 5 minutes between the simultaneous use of Taflotan and other preparations. Pregnancy and breastfeeding If pregnancy is planned, effective contraception must be used during treatment with Taflotan. Taflotan must not be used during pregnancy. This preparation must also not be used during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for advice. Children and adolescents Taflotan is not recommended for children and adolescents as there is insufficient data on safety and efficacy. Effect on ability to drive Taflotan does not impair the ability to drive. Blurred vision occurs after using Taflotan. Driving is only possible after vision has fully recovered. Important information about some ingredients of Taflotan Taflotan contains benzalkonium chloride. Benzalkonium chloride may cause allergic reactions in the eye. Contact lenses It is known that benzalkonium chloride discolors soft contact lenses, so avoid soft contact lenses. Do not use contact lenses while using the preparation. You can use contact lenses again at least 15 minutes later. How to use: Always use Taflotan exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you are unsure about anything, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Dosage: Instill one drop of Taflotan into the eye (or eyes) once daily, in the evening. Do not instill more of the preparation and do not use it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Overdosing the preparation may reduce the effect of Taflotan. Use Taflotan in both eyes only as directed by your doctor. The preparation is only for eye drops and cannot be swallowed. Instructions for using the preparation: If you are opening a new vial: Do not use the vial if the plastic cover around the screw cap or the neck of the vial is missing or damaged. Remove the plastic cover. On the label, in the space provided for the date, note the time when you opened the vial. Perform the following procedures each time you use Taflotan: 1. Wash your hands. 2. Open the vial. Be careful not to let the dropper tip touch your eyes, the skin around your eyes, or your fingers. 3. Tilt your head back and hold the vial with the tip pointing downwards over your eye. 4. Pull down your lower eyelid and look up. Gently squeeze the vial and instill the preparation between your lower eyelid and your eye. 5. Close your eye and press your finger against the inner corner of your eye for about one minute. This will prevent the drops from entering the tear duct. 6. Wipe off any excess liquid from the skin around your eyes. 7. Screw the cap back onto the vial, closing it tightly. If the drop did not go into your eye, instill it again. If your doctor has prescribed drops for both eyes, repeat the procedure described above for the second eye from step 3 to 7. If you are using other eye preparations, maintain an interval of at least 5 minutes between the simultaneous use of Taflotan and other preparations. If you have used more Taflotan than prescribed, it is unlikely to cause any serious harm. Take the next dose at the usual time. If the preparation is accidentally swallowed, consult your doctor for advice. If you forget to use Taflotan, instill one drop as soon as you remember and continue your treatment as usual. If you forget to use the preparation, do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose. Do not stop using Taflotan without consulting your doctor. If you stop using the preparation, your intraocular pressure will increase again. This can cause permanent damage to the eye. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Side effects Like all medicines, Taflotan can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. These side effects are usually not dangerous. More than 1 in 10 patients may experience the following side effects: Side effects on the eye: • Eye hyperemia Frequently occurring side effects: Less than 1 in 10 and more than 1 in 100 patients may develop the following side effects: Side effects on the eye: • Eye itching • Eye irritation • Eye pain • Dry eyes • Sensitivity to light • Blurred vision • Changes in eyelash length, thickness, and number • Change in eyelash color • Sensation of a foreign body • Watery eyes • Eye discharge • Eyelid swelling • Eyelid redness • Change in skin color around the eyes • Change in iris color (may be long-lasting) • Reduced ability of the eye to recognize details Side effects on the nervous system: • Headache Rare side effects The following side effects may occur in less than 1 in 100 and more than 1 in 1000 patients: Side effects on the eye: • Eye fatigue • Eye complaints • Abnormal sensation in the eye • Swelling of the upper eyelid membrane • Eyelid inflammation • Follicles of the upper eyelid membrane • Allergic inflammation or small punctate inflammatory areas on the surface of the eye • Presence of any type of inflammation in the eye • Conjunctival pigmentation (color change) Side effects on the skin and subcutaneous tissue: • Unusual eyelash growth on the eyelids If you notice any side effects not listed in the leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist. Storage conditions: Keep the preparation out of reach of children, its storage temperature should not exceed 25ºC. Discard the vial 28 days after its first opening to avoid infections. Use a new vial. The preparation must not be disposed of in running water or household waste. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice on how to dispose of the preparation when you no longer need it. By following these measures, you will protect the environment. Shelf life: 2 years Do not use the preparation after the expiry date indicated on the vial label and carton.
