What is it?

International Nonproprietary Name - trifluoperazine Active substance: 10-[3-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)propyl]-2-(trifluoromethyl)-10H-phenothiazine dihydrochloride; Composition: 1 ml of solution contains 2 mg of trifluoperazine hydrochloride; Pharmacotherapeutic group. Antipsychotic agents. Phenothiazine piperazine derivatives. Indications for use. Schizophrenia, especially paranoid, with simple apathetic-abulic syndrome, its weakly increased form, schizophrenia with pronounced hallucinatory-paranoid phenomena and psychopathic, neurotic, hypochondriac, senestopathic symptomatology, periodic schizophrenia with delusional symptomatology and hallucinations, mental illnesses with delirium and hallucinations: alcoholic hallucinations and paranoias, involutional psychoses, neuroses. Nausea of central origin. Method of administration and dosage. The initial dose is 1-2 mg. Repeated intramuscular administration is carried out after 4-6 hours; more frequent injections may lead to cumulative effects. As a rule, the daily dose is 6 mg, in exceptional cases - 10 mg. In depressive-hallucinatory and depressive-delusional conditions, trifluoperazine is used in combination with antidepressants. As an antiemetic, trifluoperazine is prescribed at a dose of 1-4 mg per day. Treatment with trifluoperazine should be strictly individualized, depending on the course of the disease. Treatment duration can be 3-9 months, in individual cases longer. Side effects. In some patients, side effects of the drug may develop. More precisely: - Central nervous system: drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, akathisia, dystonic extrapyramidal reactions, parkinsonism, tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, psychic indifference, delayed reaction to external stimuli; - Genitourinary system: urinary retention, decreased potency, ejaculation disorder, priapism, oliguria; - Endocrine system: hypo- or hyperglycemia, glucosuria, dysmenorrhea, gynecomastia, weight gain; - Gastrointestinal tract: anorexia, bulimia, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gastralgia, cholestatic jaundice; - Sensory organs: accommodation paresis, retinopathy, lens and cornea damage; - Hematological system: thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, anemia, pancytopenia; - Cardiovascular system: tachycardia, decreased blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension); - Allergic reactions: skin rash, urticaria, angioneurotic edema, anaphylactic shock; - Other: photodermatitis.
