What is it?
Active ingredient: Each 1 g of cream contains 50 mg of acyclovir. Excipient(s): Poloxamer, Cetostearyl alcohol, Sodium lauryl sulfate, White soft paraffin, Liquid paraffin, Propylene glycol, Purified water, Arlacel 165 (Glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate) What is Virocil and what is it used for Antiviral drug effective against Herpes Simplex (HSV) virus types I and II and Varicella Zoster. Virocil is used to treat skin infections caused by Herpes Simplex (cold sores), including primary and recurrent genital herpes and cold sores. What you need to know before using Virocil Do not use Virocil if: • If you develop an allergic reaction (rash, local pain or swelling) while using Virocil, stop using the product and inform your doctor. • If you are allergic to acyclovir, valacyclovir (a type of antiviral drug), propylene glycol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine; do not use this medicine. Take special care when using Virocil in the following situations: • It is not recommended to apply Virocil to areas such as the mouth, eyes or vagina, as this may cause irritation. Be especially careful not to get it in your eyes accidentally. • Oral forms of acyclovir should be considered if you have severe immunodeficiency (e.g., AIDS or bone marrow transplant). • If you have this type of condition, you must consult a doctor for the treatment of any infection. • Cetostearyl alcohol contained in Virocil may cause local skin reactions (e.g., contact dermatitis). • Due to its special base, Virocil should not be diluted or used to dilute other preparations. If these warnings apply to you, even if they have occurred in the past, consult your doctor. Pregnancy: Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using the medication. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Virocil should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit to you outweighs the risks. If you find out you are pregnant during treatment, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Lactation: When using Virocil cream during breastfeeding, the amount of the drug transferred to the baby from milk is negligible. Important information about some ingredients of Virocil: Virocil may cause skin irritation due to the propylene glycol it contains. Virocil may cause local skin reactions, such as contact dermatitis, due to the cetostearyl alcohol it contains. Use with other medicines: Virocil should not be mixed with other creams or ointments. Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking or have recently taken any medicines. How to take Virocil - Take Virocil 5 times a day, at approximately 4-hour intervals, skipping the night dose. - Apply Virocil to the affected area as soon as symptoms or infection appear (redness or signs of disease onset). You can also start treatment during late symptoms (blisters or fluid-filled blisters). - For cold sores, treatment should continue for at least 4 days, and for genital herpes for 5 days. If there is no improvement, treatment may be continued for up to 10 days. - Apply a small amount of Virocil to the affected area. If you think the effect of Virocil is too strong or too weak, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If you use more Virocil than you should: Side effects are not expected. However, gastrointestinal (nausea and vomiting) and neurological (headache and confusion) effects have been reported when repeated doses of acyclovir were accidentally taken over several days. Acyclovir can be removed from the body by hemodialysis (a blood cleansing procedure). If you use more Virocil than you should, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If you forget to use Virocil: Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Possible effects when stopping treatment with Virocil: Do not stop using the product without consulting your doctor. Possible side effects: If any of the following symptoms occur, stop using Virocil and inform your doctor immediately or go to the emergency department of the nearest hospital: Hypersensitivity reactions: • Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching or hives on the skin • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body Not so often • Temporary burning or stinging on the skin • Mild drying or peeling of the skin • Itching Rarely • Redness • Contact dermatitis (a type of skin disease) Storage conditions for Virocil: Keep Virocil out of the reach and sight of children in its original packaging. Store at room temperature below 25°C. Use according to the expiry date. Do not use Virocil after the expiry date indicated on the packaging. Do not dispose of expired or unused medicines in the trash! Hand them over to the collection system established by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
