What is it?

1. What is Dozilax and what is it used for Dozilax (donepezil hydrochloride) belongs to a group of medicines called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. It is used to treat the symptoms of dementia in people diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, and changes in behavior. As a result, patients with Alzheimer's disease find it increasingly difficult to carry out normal daily activities. Dozilax is used only in adult patients.   2. What you need to know before taking Dozilax Do not take Dozilax: • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to donepezil hydrochloride or piperidine derivatives or any of the other ingredients of Dozilax. • During breastfeeding. Take special care with Dozilax Tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting Dozilax if you have ever had or have: • Stomach or duodenal ulcer • Seizures (fits) or crises • Heart disease (irregular or very slow heart rate) • Asthma or other chronic lung diseases • Liver (hepatic) or hepatitis problems • Urinary problems or mild kidney disease • If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Taking other medicines Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines. This includes medicines not prescribed by your doctor but bought by you from a pharmacy. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about any medicines you may take in the future if you continue to take Dozilax, as these medicines may reduce or enhance the effect of Dozilax. Tell your doctor especially if you are taking any of the following types of medicines: • Other medicines for Alzheimer's disease, e.g. galantamine • Painkillers or medicines for arthritis, e.g. aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or diclofenac sodium • Anticholinergics, e.g. tolterodine • Antibiotics e.g. erythromycin, rifampicin • Antifungal drugs, e.g. ketoconazole, • Antidepressants, e.g. fluoxetine • Anticonvulsants, e.g. phenytoin, carbamazepine • Medicines for heart disease, e.g. quinidine, beta-blockers (propranolol and atenolol), • Muscle relaxants, e.g. diazepam, succinylcholine • General anaesthetics • Over-the-counter medicines e.g. herbal medicines. If you are going to have an operation that requires general anaesthesia, you must inform your doctor and anaesthetist that you are taking Dozilax, as Dozilax may affect the amount of anaesthetic needed. Dozilax can be used in patients with kidney disease or mild to moderate liver disease. Always inform your doctor first if you have kidney or liver disease. Patients with severe liver disease should not take Dozilax. Tell your doctor or pharmacist the name of the person who looks after you. The person who looks after you will help you take the medicine as prescribed. Taking Dozilax with food and drink Food will not affect the efficacy of Dozilax. Dozilax must not be taken with alcohol, as alcohol may alter its effect.   Pregnancy and breastfeeding Dozilax must not be used during breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, consult your doctor before taking this medicine. Driving and operating machinery Alzheimer's disease can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery, and these activities should be avoided unless your doctor tells you it is safe. In addition, your medicine may cause fatigue, dizziness, and muscle cramps, and if these conditions occur, do not drive or operate machinery.   Important information about some of the ingredients of Dozilax This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, you should consult your doctor before taking Dozilax.   3. How Dozilax tablets are taken How much Dozilax should you take? Usually, you should start by taking 5 mg every night. After one month, your doctor may advise you to take 10 mg every night. Swallow the Dozilax tablet with water, before going to bed. The strength of the tablet taken may change depending on how long you have been taking the medicine and on your doctor's recommendation. The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg every night. Always follow your doctor's or pharmacist's advice on how and when to take the medicine. Do not change the dose of the medicine yourself without your doctor's advice. How long should you take Dozilax? Your doctor or pharmacist will advise you on how long you should continue taking the tablets. Regular visits to your doctor are necessary to assess your treatment and symptoms. If you stop taking Dozilax Do not stop taking the tablets unless your doctor advises you to do so. If you stop taking Dozilax, the benefits of the treatment will gradually decrease. If you take more Dozilax than you should Do not take more than one tablet per day. Contact your doctor immediately if you take more tablets than you should. If you cannot contact your doctor, call your local hospital's emergency centre immediately. Always take the tablets and the box with you to the hospital so that the doctor knows what you have taken.   Symptoms of overdose include nausea and vomiting, salivation, sweating, slowing of the heart rate, low blood pressure (dizziness or lightheadedness on standing up), breathing problems, loss of consciousness, and seizures (fits). If you forget to take Dozilax If you forget to take a tablet, take one tablet the next day at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. If you forget to take the medicine for more than a week, consult your doctor before restarting the medicine.   4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, Dozilax can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The following side effects have been reported with Dozilax. Tell your doctor if any of the listed effects develop while taking Dozilax. Serious side effects: You should tell your doctor immediately if you notice any of these side effects. You may need urgent medical attention. • Liver damage e.g. hepatitis. Symptoms of hepatitis are: nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, general weakness, fever, itching, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and dark urine (likely to occur in less than 1 in 1000 people). • Stomach or duodenal ulcer. Symptoms of an ulcer are stomach pain and discomfort (indigestion) between the navel and the breastbone (likely to occur in less than 1 in 100 people) • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines. This may cause the passage of black, tar-like stools or visible blood from the rectum (likely to occur in less than 1 in 100 people) • Seizures (fits) or convulsions (likely to occur in less than 1 in 100 people) Very common side effects (likely to occur in more than 1 in 10 people) • Diarrhoea, • Nausea or vomiting • Headaches Common side effects (may occur in 1 in 10 people) • Muscle cramps • Fatigue • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) • Cold • Loss of appetite • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there) • Psychomotor stimulation • Aggressive behaviour • Loss of consciousness • Dizziness • Stomach spasm • Skin rash • Itching • Urinary incontinence • Pain • Falls (patients may be prone to falls and injuries) Uncommon side effects (likely to occur in less than 1 in 100 people): • Bradycardia Rare side effects (likely to occur in less than 1 in 1000 people): • Rigidity, tremor or uncontrolled movement, especially of the face and tongue, and also of the limbs. Also tell your doctor if you notice any other side effects while taking Dozilax that are not listed in this leaflet.   5. How to store the medicine (Dozilax tablets) Do not store this medicine above 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use Dozilax tablets after the expiry date which is stated on the label. The expiry date is the last day of the month indicated. If your doctor tells you to stop taking this medicine, you should return any unused medicine to your pharmacist.   6. Further information What Dozilax tablets contain • The active substance of Dozilax is donepezil hydrochloride. A 5 mg tablet contains 5 mg of donepezil hydrochloride and a 10 mg tablet contains 10 mg of donepezil hydrochloride. • Other ingredients are lactose monohydrate, maize starch, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, Opadry Y - 1 - 7000 White.
